Moonlight over Staithes

This dramatic view of Staithes is taken from the view point of Cowbar Nab.

This is Staithes illuminated at night time, by street lights and moonlight.

I was on a field trip to Staithes to sketch and paint in summer 2014. It was a most glorious August day. The sun was very hot and Staithes was heaving with people. We ate fresh crab sandwiches at the cafe on the sea front.

I have "borrowed" the colours from images of the Italian Riviera and the delightful coloured houses that are seen on the Italian Coast. The dramatic descent at Staithes reminds me very much of the Cinque Terra coastline and the colours of the painting were inspired by the town of Manarola.
