Welcome to Bakewell
This painting was inspired by an ancient etching of Bakewell and I liked the perspective of it. At the time the etching made, in the mid-1800’s, the car park was non-existent and sheep roamed just above the main road into Bakewell. I especially liked the clear view of Bagshaw Hall on the etching, seen on the far right of the painting, which at one time was a very prominent visible building in Bakewell. Bagshaw Hall is a beautiful 17th century Grade 11 listed building, which is now a hotel. Now it is difficult to catch a glimpse of the building without walking right up to it as Bakewell is much more built up, and there are many tall trees.
Of course the Canada Geese seen beside the river in the painting have been a feature of Bakewell for very many years.
